This includes the refit of many existing vehicles to carry hydrogen fuel cells. Project partner Faun Group within Clean Hydrogen Coastline targets 12,000 hydrogen vehicles in use by 2026. Keussen says the mobility project will show the world how to scale-up hydrogen power for transport. On the industrial side, EWE has teamed up with ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel producer, to implement green steel production at the long-established Bremen steelworks. An initial 12MW electrolyzer – soon to be expanded to 100MW – will refine hydrogen from water for the coal plant using wind energy, with any surplus used for mobility. SUBSIDY ESSENTIAL “We need to rely on subsidies to make it happen,” says Dohler, “and we’re working hard to fill the gap, partly through recognition as an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI).” The projects tie together under the banner Clean Hydrogen Coastline, and have made Germany’s IPCEI shortlist. They await an EU funding decision. “This region can be the nucleus of a growing European hydrogen hotspot,” Dohler says. “We have the harbours, the wind, the technology, and the infrastructure. We’re adjacent to the Netherlands, which is also actively creating a hydrogen economy. We are creating an attractive hydrogen region for the world to emulate and laying the foundation for a European hydrogen economy.” An article featuring STEFAN DOHLER & URBAN KEUSSEN Partnerships will be essential, he says. “No one will make it on their own. We must understand who can contribute to which Chief Executive and Chief Technical Officer part of the chain, which characteristics of an individual firm at EWE complement others.” The result, he says, will be “new business opportunities on a healthier planet.” 21
