INTERVIEW Hyundai: Hydrogen on the road Two pioneers of the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle industry discuss the past, present, and future of the technology. Sae Hoon Kim: Fabio! Great to meet you again. I remember when you were first showing your Symbio fuel cell car in 2012. Fabio Ferrari: It was a time of pioneers. We were presenting our first hydrogen vehicle, the Renault Kangoo, at the Paris Motor Show. You had a huge booth to exhibit the very first hydrogen car available on the market – not a prototype like mine, but something people could actually buy. It was incredible. How have the economics of hydrogen vehicles changed since then? SHK: Back then when it was really difficult to get the components. Each part was $20,000. Even so, we began mass production in 2013 with our Tucson, and then in 2018 with our NEXO fuel cell A conversation between vehicle. With that, the number of component suppliers is increasing, Senior Vice President CEO aDryada creating competition, so the cost of parts of Hyundai’s Fuel Cell Centre and Cofounder Symbio is coming down very rapidly. I think this trend will continue, because we have 40
